  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • Two 8-ounce cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces citrus-flavored soda, such as Mountain Dew (two-thirds of a 12-ounce can)
  • Cinnamon, for sprinkling

How To Make Apple Dumplings Recipe?

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and butter a 23x33cm (9×13-inch) baking dish.
  2. Peel, Core & Slice Apples: Peel and core the apples, then cut each into 8 even slices.
  3. Wrap the Apples: Roll each apple slice in a piece of crescent roll dough and place them in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Make the Sauce: Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat, then add the sugar and stir just enough to combine. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Assemble & Add Liquid: Pour the butter mixture evenly over the wrapped apples. Pour the citrus soda around the edges of the pan (not directly over the dumplings).
  6. Sprinkle & Bake: Generously sprinkle cinnamon over the dumplings, then bake for about 40 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on top.
  7. Serve & Enjoy: Spoon some of the sweet sauce from the pan over the dumplings before serving. Best enjoyed warm!

Recipe Tips:

  • Use Cold Dough for Easy Rolling : Keep the crescent roll dough cold until you’re ready to use it. Warm dough gets sticky and harder to roll around the apples.
  • Don’t Overmix the Butter & Sugar : When making the sauce, stir the butter and sugar just enough to combine. Overmixing can make the sauce too grainy instead of smooth and caramel-like.
  • Pour the Soda Around, Not Over : Pour the citrus soda around the edges of the pan, not directly on the dumplings. This keeps the tops crispy while creating a rich, syrupy sauce underneath.
  • Use Granny Smith Apples for the Best Flavor : Their tartness balances the sweetness of the sauce and prevents the dumplings from becoming too soft.
  • Let Them Rest Before Serving : Allow the dumplings to cool for at least 5–10 minutes after baking. This helps the sauce thicken slightly and makes them easier to serve without falling apart.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers?

  • Refrigerate: Let the leftover Apple Dumplings cool to room temperature. Then, place them in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat: Preheat the air fryer to 160°C (320°F). Place the dumplings in the basket and heat for 5–7 minutes, checking halfway through to prevent over-browning.
