Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 stick salted butter
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
  • Dash cinnamon
  • Vanilla Ice Cream, for serving

How To Make Bananas Foster?

  1. Melt the butter & sugar: In a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter, then stir in the brown sugar. Cook for 1-2 minutes until combined.
  2. Add the cream & bananas: Pour in the heavy cream and stir to mix. Peel the bananas, slice them on a bias, and add them to the pan.
  3. Stir in the nuts & rum: Add the chopped walnuts or pecans and stir. Carefully pour in the dark rum, allowing it to bubble slightly.
  4. Flambé the rum (optional): Using a long lighter, carefully ignite the alcohol. Let the flames burn for about 30 seconds before they naturally subside. (Have a lid nearby in case you need to extinguish the flame.)
  5. Finish with cinnamon & serve: Stir in a dash of cinnamon and immediately spoon the warm banana mixture over scoops of vanilla ice cream.

Recipe Tips:

  • Use ripe but firm bananas : Soft bananas will turn mushy when cooked. Choose yellow bananas with no brown spots for the best texture.
  • Don’t overcook the caramel : Once the sugar and butter melt together, stir gently and cook just until smooth. Overcooking can make the sauce too thick or grainy.
  • Flambé safely : If using rum, remove the pan from the heat before adding it, then light it carefully with a long lighter. Always keep a lid nearby in case you need to put out the flame.
  • Serve immediately : Bananas Foster thickens as it cools, so spoon it over ice cream or pancakes right away for the perfect consistency.
  • No rum? No problem! : You can skip the flambé and use a splash of vanilla extract or apple juice instead. It won’t have the same deep flavor, but it will still taste delicious

How To Store Leftovers?

Let the leftover Bananas Foster cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
